Quasimodo's Gift
2024 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert

This animation was designed for Chenyu Hua's Mars Concert, specifically for the song Quasimodo's Gift. Drawing on the classic literary character of Quasimodo, the animation explores themes of embracing suffering and finding solace in solitude. In the visual design, the Buddhist concept of “The Eight Sufferings of Life” was incorporated.

At the song's climax, monstrous figures representing each suffering appeared on the screen. As these creatures dissolved, the singer’s eyes emerged, radiating acceptance and serenity—symbols of the strength and peace gained from confronting pain, with symbols of his fans woven in them. Chenyu Hua himself appears within these eyes on the screen, merging with the animation to create a powerful emotional connection that resonated deeply with the audience.

Psychology of the Grotesque

I also created the animation and the character's 3D model for the song Psychology of the Grotesque.

The song explores how people often feel pressured to conform, suppressing their true selves to appear “normal” to others, like puppets controlled by society. In doing so, they lose their innocence, uniqueness, and imagination. The song encourages listeners to keep their individuality and creativity, even if others may view them as “peculiar.”

Visually, the animation blends whimsical and dark elements. In the first half, the animals in a young boy’s mind transform into various faces as he absorbs outside influences, reflecting an inner struggle. The second half shifts to imaginative, surreal imagery, representing the liberation of his true self.

Alongside the animation, real-time interactive technology was integrated.

In the latter part of the performance, to emphasize the theme of breaking free from societal constraints and embracing individuality, live footage of the singer was processed in real time and combined with the animation I created

I was truly honored to fully design and produce the visuals for Hua’s most significant new song of the tour, Morning Light With You—a heartfelt piece that beautifully tells a story of love and hope.

I wish to capture every element that fills me with a sense of gentleness and the unconditional love of this world. With each line, I hope to weave blessings and vibrant colors into my art, harmonizing with Hua’s singing to create a tender, vivid dream for everyone—a dream where we can all immerse ourselves in the warmth of this love together.
